Saucy lady

Is it possible to fall into lust over one woman's throat? I got my hands on Amy Winehouse's 2003 album "Frank" two weeks ago and then had to go out and get her latest "Back to Black" straight away. I think I prefer the jazz stylings on the her first album more (oh god, it's on high rotation) but whose complaining? Back to Black is more of a homage to the 60's Girl groups but done her in own inimitable way - Rehab, Mr and Mrs Jones, Wake Up Alone and Addicted are all stand out tracks. Not only can she sing the pants off her contemporaries (and probably has) but her lyrics are excellent - wry, predatory and full of emotional resonance that bounce around in your head for days afterwards. There's plenty of nasty NW magazine drivel about her drinking, cussing and fighting which makes her all the more wonderful (I likes 'em feisty) - can't recommend her highly enough.

And a grand time was had by all....

Ok - It’s a big entry because I’ve let it lapse (well it is the swimming championships soon – geddit? Huh huh?) Now that I have emerged from the thick funk of inebriation I guess I should elucidate on the happenings during my summer Sydney holiday/working visit/championship
title defending tour.

The city was fantastic – beautiful weather made for lots of time on foot exploring the wrong way down hilly streets (Use a map? Bah…I’m a man) and loads of bookshop visits - salivating over pricey tomes with pretty pictures. I met up and had dinner with the delightful Felicity and Craig and I marveled at their glorious balcony view and world famous - award winning Italian sausage - risotto (yes WORLD famous) then it was back to the wonderful No 71 B&B in Bondi Junction – an amazing place with terrific rooms and service (and a dog named spot who tried to eat me by way of hello).

Thursday night saw me doff my Porkpie and trundle off to the Chauvel Cinema where the premiere of “The Notorious Bettie Page” was being held. The Belladonnas where in full force and there were lashings of errr... lashings and beer before going in to watch the film.

Crappy phone camera was all I had folks...

- on a side note it all ends rather poorly with Bettie returning to Church and a life redeemed, a fact that seemed to disappoint this well (high) heeled crowd somewhat…

Friday 2pm: I met fellow theatresports team members Rik, Rama and Jason and Glen Hall from Perthland out the front of the salubrious Rooftop Travellers Lodge and we set up base camp at the pub opposite - there we sat down and wrote out all our scenes for the show....nah we drank quite a lot of booze and waited for the other States to turn up.

Portrait of the Artist as a Young Boozehound

Jason Geary and his love of the "f' verb

Rama with still life

Katrina and Alister from Brisbane turned up, followed by the rest of Perthland - Xaiver, Jimmy and Tegan...more merriment etc...

Tegan's cheek, Alister, Jimmy, Xaiver and Cale

Around 7pm we staggered off to the official welcome dinner at the Roxbury hotel were we met up with Bec De Unumuno and co.

The rest of the team members turned up and we ate, drank and told loads of filthy, filthy jokes so we wouldn't do it onstage the next night (well that was the plan I guess)

Interesting note: the calamari was excellent but apparently the Snapper was quite rubbery...

Stagger, stagger, laugh, giggle, smoke, cough, sneeze, late night rooftop shenanigans, laugh, laugh - snore.

The Glebe Saturday market was on so we all went down, had breakfast and waited for the 4.30 call for that night...

Much, much later after getting a taxi to the Theatre (strangely there was no one to drive us) we entered the beautiful Enmore Theatre and quickly lay down and went to sleep only to be woken be the arrival of musician extraordinaire John Thorn, as well our Hostesses for the night – Julia Zemiro and Josie O’Reilly. Then we all went and did a massive tech run.

WA: Glen, Xaiver, Tegan & Jimmy

QLD: Katrina, Tom, Alister & Tamzin
NSW: John, Michal, Murray & Amanda

There was no theme (as there has in the past) this year and to her credit Rebecca had created a simple, smooth running order that would allow for maximum impro time onstage - lovely stuff. All the suggestions came from Josie as Time keeper and all the rounds were timed scenes. The format went something like this:

Game from a hat
Challenge Round
Mix and Match (two members from two teams play a scene together)

Interval

Solo scene
Audience Challenge (got at interval and put in the hat)
Fantasy scene (team plays something they've always wanted to see onstage, or thereabouts)

The show kicked off with a song by a local rapper - Brother Black - and it brought all the teams in with energy etc. The show went really well we started off the night with an ‘I Love You’ scene set on a Pirate ship and away we went. Good vibes from all teams meant loads of helping out in each others scenes and plenty of that goodwill spilling out into the audience. Julia and Josie were hilarious as the hostesses with the mostesses and we all had ball. We scored two 5 - 5 - 5's in the night I’ve never jumped that high onstage before in my life.

The Enmore theatre was full that night (around a 1000 happy punters) and I have never heard such a wonderful sound as the tumultuous roar of laughter that kept coming from that audience. Truly a great night of improv from all the states.

We won by one point over WA which was a surprise (we thought they were going to win) and we all waved and nicked offstage to much applause.

The rest of the night is a blur of seeing happy faces (Steph!, Felicity! Scrabblers! Dave Callan!), speeches, medals, booze, smoke and happy times. Laughter, beer, wine, G & T’s (by god I’m amazed I didn’t keel over with blood poisoning), fags, the world's most dangerous MacDonalds outlet, loads of wonderful chatting with Rubber Soul and a beautiful vision in a baggy jacket… Finishing only when I saw the sun rising up over the kitchen sink, piercing the dream and starting the car key of reality. Such a shame…truly a night I never wanted to end.

My heartfelt thanks to Impro Australia for putting on the Nationals and getting us up there and looking after us etc and thanks for sending me Impro Melbourne - it was an honour and a privilege.

Cough, hack, heck, spittle etc Next – THE COMEDY FESTIVAL!

El Diablo Rides Again (for the first time)

The year is starting up again (visions of myself at a crankhandle giving it a good winding up come to mind) and there are some interesting projects on the horizon including:

The National Theatresports Championship - Saturday 10th March @ The Enmore Theatre, Sydney. I have been selected along with Jase, Rik and Rama by Impro Melbourne (cheers and thanks) to trot up to Sydney and play nice with our chums from Impro Australia. I'm really looking forward to catching up with the fantastic improvisers from around this country including the Director of whole shebang, Rebecca DeUnamuno as well as some mates in High places (hiya Felicity)

Here's a pic of our team "El Diablo" (that's me on the left with no neck and a wayward pants leg)
Photographer - the amazing James Penlidis

Deakin Uni have asked me back to take on some 1st year Drama and Media again. This year I will churn out more superstars and wunderkinder no doubt, all vying to knock me out of the way...hey wait a minute...maybe I'll teach them philosophy and apathy under the guise of "drama" instead....yeah - that's the ticket....

more to come...

Here's some doodles I have been tossing out while playing with illustrator...

ugh ugly gif marks...

How to be a Happy Chappie (in a Natty Serape)

I was reading Peter Stothard's article about "the twelve things we need in order to be happy" and thought I'd have a crack at it too (adjust to suite gender obviously):

Lliam Amor's 12 Step Happy Program or "Wheeeeeee."

Sticking your nose in a packet of freshly ground coffee (an obvious one but neccessary)

Summer dresses and the occasional glance of intoxicating beauty on public transport

A well stocked second hand bookstore with old theatre programs and cheap records

Fresh sheets, two soft non-allergenic pillows and a tasteful doona cover, mysteriously made each morning

Businessmen who accidentally trip up in the street

An unexpectedly good meal at a last minute restaurant choice

A new black pen

Red Hot Riding Hood - directed by Tex Avery and released on May 8, 1943 by MGM

That Kiss (you know the one)

Wearing a hat that compliments

The Goodies

Hearing a piece of music wafting out of someone’s window and rather liking it but never knowing who it’s by until years later when they play it in that Second hand Bookstore.

So far...

Q: Dream or Reality?

I am standing on a huge stage painted white, I am tired and groggy after doing nothing for 10 hours, I have a microphone in my hand standing next to me is Australian Idol Guy Mutto - next to him is Jazz legend James Morrison - we are singing the Easybeats classic "Friday on my Mind" - I am out of tune and pretending to be a bogan. In another 10 hours my image will be on a huge screen projected out to 1500 people - I am wearing an open Hawaiian shirt and a fake chest - I can't take my eyes off the erect rubber nipple that is jutting out at the bottom of the screen. I have a thin bead of sweat across my forehead as I am about to go live with no rehearsal.

A: Welcome to my life.

I have been using Illustrator to mock up some ideas for a new children's book. Slowly I am starting to acclimatise myself to it's quirks and intricacies. I am a big fan of the flat vector stuff...

A bonus:

I realised I don't draw many pictures of myself in a chipper mood. So like a weird reverse Dorian Grey here's me looking happy.

Happy New Year 2007

I hope you had a great new year - I myself threw caution to the wind and went into the city. After finding a neat car park in Little Lonsdale St I joined the sea of humanity that was surging towards Flinders Street Station...my god - what a mix of people. Mostly scary I must admit - huge gangs of roving male teenagers all sporting the sucked mango or neo-mullet look and with hunger for booze and flesh - 20 something’s squeezed into cocktail dresses, high heels and Bacardi breezers - harassed grandparents - screaming kids - lost tourists - two people on bikes (now rendered useless), a women with a broken leg being pushed in a wheelchair (in a crowded street - ouch) - street hawkers selling 10 cent glow sticks for $5 and loving it - three certified insane people - small packs of policemen and women looking strained and three Chinese princesses handing out flyers.

Many hours later....I had:

Seen the 9.30pm fireworks from a relatively deserted Arts Centre forecourt
Spilt a drink on Judy from Sydney who I had just met
Waited 20 mins at a bar for drink
Had two dances before the band quit
Took photos for a table full of strangers
Watched the fireworks from the balcony of the Blue Diamond club (well...what we could see...some spurts off the top of a very phallic Casino building...a touch anticlimactic)

Smoked a cigar
Felt trashed at Eurotrash
Met some lovely French folks , one of whom was a logistics coordinator for Barbie (the doll)
Wandered the streets of Melbourne feeling like an observer, sidestepping vomit and trying not to get into any fights.
Stopped off in Brunswick Street to eat one of the garlickiest Souvlakis ever known to man

ahhhhhh another new year gone in a classy fashion....

Some good nerdy fan news to start the year with:

INDY IV TO START PRODUCTION IN 2007.
In a long-awaited announcement from Lucasfilm, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg revealed that the fourth instalment of INDIANA JONES would begin production in June 2007. Harrison Ford returns in his role as the daring Dr. Jones for the new adventure. The film will be produced by Lucasfilm Ltd., directed by Spielberg and released by Paramount Pictures throughout the world in May 2008. The screenplay has been written by David Koepp.

Spielberg said, "George, Harrison and I are all very excited. We feel that the script was well worth the wait. We hope it delivers everything you'd expect from our history with Indiana Jones."

The film will be produced by Frank Marshall, with Lucas and Kathy Kennedy as exec producers. "Working with Steven, Frank, Kathy and the INDY crew is like working with family," adds Lucas, who just served as grand marshal of the Rose Parade. "These films are such great fun to make. I'm looking forward to reuniting with the team and starting this new journey."

Ford commented, "I'm delighted to be back in business with my old friends. I don't know if the pants still fit but I know the hat will."

The movie will be shot on undisclosed locations around the world, as well as in the U.S., including L.A.

(As grabbed from the AWN newsletter.)

Here’s to a better 2007 folks.

Cheers
