Cheers to the Year.

Christmas felicitations to all in blog land. I trust you are well.

The original idea at the start of the year was simple: Pack the first half of 2011 with shows, design, teaching and jackanapes then have a baby in June and take it nice and slow in the second half.

Well, the best laid plans of Lliam and Men...

There was a "10 years in the Biz" celebration at the Day Job and a nice certificate to go with it, some corporate work from the delightful Nikki Parry and some illustration/poster work for an old friend Mr Chris Thompson.

Then it was back up to Sydney to film a new tv show for Ten called Micro-Nation. I'll let TV Tonight explain:

"Micro Nation is described as “the tale of Pullamawang, a forgotten island nation lying off the Australian coast. Home to a cast of larger-than-life characters, their absurd but comfortable lives are thrown into disarray with the discovery of diamonds.”

The ensemble cast also includes Lliam Amor, Kit Brookman, David Collins, Dan Cordeaux, Rebecca De Unamuno, Harriet Dyer, Roz Hammond, John Leary, James Mackay, and Jon Williams.

TEN chief programming officer, David Mott, said: “Micro Nation is yet another step towards developing new opportunities in digital television for the network, and for Australia’s commercial television landscape. We’re excited to bring such a funny and original Australian project to the ELEVEN audience.”

Producer, Linda Ujuk, added: “Micro Nation is a smart and completely absurd comedy that cleverly reflects current Australia and how it finds its place in the world. We’re extremely proud to be collaborating with Boomball, a team of six up-and-coming writers with backgrounds in stand up and sketch comedy, who have created some serious funny.”

I play the villain (misunderstood, of course): Menzies McFadden. Not one bit of scenery was left unchewed by the time I got through shooting. Keep your eyes peeled on Channel 11 for this one.

All through this year my lovely family have been amazing and a constant source of wonder and encouragement.

Now as the year begins to wind down, the baby winds up and I'm just windy... I say "thank you 2011 - you've been grand".

New Posters and Seasoned Travellers

Buckley, the Baby and I all trooped up to Sydney recently, to see her ancestral family home and those inside as well as giving me a chance to get along to the GRAPHIC festival at the Sydney Opera House. One of the highlights was a talk by FRANK creator, Jim Woodring. A fascinating insight into his mind, working process and surreal creations. Other highlights included a thought provoking and illuminating panel discussion about wordless comics with Woodring, Peter Kuper and local hero Nathan Jurevicius. The less said about Robert Crumb not turning up the better.

Bummed that I missed out on the workshops and the talk with Scott McCloud.

While in Sydney I also got to see the fabulous Mad Square exhibition - when it gets to Melbourne I urge everyone to go see it.

Back in Melbourne we did a return season of the improvised longform Pia Zadora at Impro Melbourne - fast becoming my favourite format for it's simplicity and possibilities.

Next it was up to Brisbane with B & B (Buckley and Baby) for the Off The Cuff Festival which is run by the excellent group Impro Mafia. I performed in two shows, ran a workshop in Pia and Long form and got to hold the baby backstage while Buckley and friends did some sterling work in the National Theatresports Competition (Victoria won).

The Actor and the Advertising Industry...

So... I went in for a TV ad casting the other day, short notice shoot, learnt the script, read to camera etc, got a call back, nice. Went back in, met the director and did the same piece to camera, ok - not as good. "We'll let you know - shooting is this Friday". That Friday I was scheduled to fly to Sydney for the Graphic Festival... but as so often happens in my life - the fee outweighed the pain of changing flights etc. So I wait for confirmation. Wednesday rolls around and I figure I haven't got it. A call to the agent fails to throw light on the subject - apparently it's down to me and another actor (great!) but now they want to see more people from the agency (what?)...

Turns out they'd stiffed the casting agent by secretly going to another while he was casting around. Disgusted, he washed his hands of them... fair enough - but what about me? I still hadn't been told a definitive "no" yet and it was now Thursday and I needed answers. After some calling around I was finally told "your services won't be needed for this one". I had already figured as much. Apparently the Director and the Producer liked me for the role but the client wanted the person they "saw in their imagination".

Let's just say the next time you see a "doughy" chef onscreen complaining about his finances it won't be me and I'm 100% certain that this client doesn't "Live in my world". Just. Plain. Rude.

Foggy Morning in Melbourne Town

As the streets of Melbourne resemble a location shot for The Mist - I start to ponder on recent events.

Our Adelaide adventure seems like a century ago but the upshot was a mixed bag of highs and lows:

Dave, Amanda and I mounted a sketch show with only two weekends of rehearsal with the rest being virtual discussion and aborted Skype conferences (stupid computers). We ironed out the kinks during the run and ended up with a slick, funny show that suffered from lack of audience exposure.

While the TuxCat maybe a funky venue with an "all hands on deck" attitude they were battling to get the venue ready by the opening of the Festival - frustrating when you have black outs in your show but these are rendered useless by the sunlight streaming in through the windows onto your rickety MDF/milk crate stage. Being on the third floor of a dusty, condemned heritage building (don't step there - you could go through the floor) with no lift surely cut out that all important 60+ demographic that we were aiming for. Oh well - live and learn.

The Festival itself was grand - Some great acts and wonderful performers - highlights included the new Dead Cat Bounce show, Patrick Monahan and the return of Ross Daniels's show The Transposed man.

Gluttony had a great atmosphere and Amanda and I enjoyed lounging around in bean bags under lantern lit trees, sipping G & Ts and eavesdropping on punter's reviews of the acts.

It was joyful to throw our hat in the ring and to finally be a part of something that I had long earmarked down as a "To Do". Thanks again to Dave Bloustien for suggesting the idea in the first place.

Merrily we rolled back into town and started to prepare for the Melbourne Comedy Festival. All the while getting Amanda used to a new home, State and finding room for all her stuff in amongst all my accumulated junk (I come from a long line of hoarders - when my Granadma died we were astonished to find thousands of ice cream lids in her garage...) At this point it would be remiss of me not to mention that AB was pregnant and we were trying to cram in as much as we possibly could before the baby came.

This year I directed and performed in Late Night Impro and put together a formidable cast and a ridiculous schedule - 11pm shows Thurs, Fri & Sat three weeks in a row. Not so bad you might think? But I cast Jason Geary, Rik Brown and myself as the main hosts and with all the other shit we were doing in our lives it nearly killed us. Ugh. Still we had some great guests (Brent Hill from Rock of Ages, Jimmy James Eaton, Amanda and Susie Youssef) Unfortunately we just missed out on having the improv legend Greg Proops join us onstage (although I did get to pose a question to him during his Proopcast on the last night of the Fest).

Recently I completed a fantastic collaboration with the incredibly talented Anton Emdin which led to this project: Shrinks!

I've got a whole bunch of things coming up (new posters for Fringe, a trip to Sydney to see Robert Crumb, another season of Pia Zadora, more spots on Neighbours etc) but the biggest thing that's happily taking up my time at the moment is the birth of our son Dashiell - nearly three weeks old now and just a wonderful little bundle.

Here you go - something free for the Modern kids of today. A handy dandy wallet card - simply download, print out, cut carefully around the edges using a sharp instrument (perhaps scissors?), fold along dotted line 'A' and pop it in your leather wallet or purse - then when anyone stops you to ask details about 'An Evening with Style and Panache' - the egg will NOT be on your face (can we suggest a plate?). 2011 - and a new start

Interesting how life trips and turns and leaves you gasping, humming and sighing. There are plenty of things filling up the year already as the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Comedy Festival loom large.
Posters, flyers and web banners have been flowing out the Amor Studio at a clip as well as book cover designs, badges and stationary.

This has been balanced with writing and rehearsing a new sketch show with Sydney comedian and improviser, Dave Bloustien for the aforementioned Adelaide Fringe. An Evening with Style and Panache will debut at the Tuxedo Cat Feb 17th -27. (Tickets are now on sale)

I was also honoured to be asked by Dan Ilic to be a part of EVAPOR-AID - a night of comedy to raise funds for the QLD and VIC flood tragedies. Improv geniuses Jason Geary and Rik Brown joined me on stage for some Shakespeare/Bogan switch-a-roo.

On a personal note - This week I head up to Sydney to bring the delightful Ms Amanda Buckley down to Melbourne to come and live with me and share some good times. Keep an eye on twitter for Road Trip updates :)

Also to round out the month there is another fundraiser myself, Julia Zemiro, Jason and a whole bunch of friends are doing to raise some money for the Kid's Plus Foundation and to help our friend Helen get her little girl a special bike. Click the image and check out that amazing line up.

Looking up the delightful nose of Geoffrey Rush whilst sitting in the front row of The Drowsy Chaperone.

I was a Running Man Bird Plane with dodgy cardboard wings and a vest.

Buying the Rutles DVD for $6

Finding a ceramic snack holder in the shape of a hessian bag and the term "Nut sack" carved into it.

Listening to Casey Bennetto sing the lesser known Bee Gees songs at the SB BBQ

I got my ducted heating serviced.

Auditioned for a suspect sportsbet ad by Brian Mannix in leather pants

Jason Geary & I sat in a seedy Merimbula motel & watched the exploitation animation "The Haunted World of Super El Beasto"

Slipping "We love pussy" (in context) into a 'Bed of Roses' ADR (dubbing) session at the ABC and giggling.

Finding the Big Book of Erotic Comics Vol 2 at a Savers in Footscray (and the ensuing weird look at the check out)

Stumbling across brain matter on the beach at Queenscliff with the kids. Poking it with a stick.

Running into Jase and Angus Sampson (who kept running) and all my Sydney friends at World's Funniest Picnic

Watching the old school Theatresports players bust out their schtick to a packed crowd at Theatreworks.

Finally realising I had the oven tray in the wrong way around and righting it.

Taking an break on set, dressed as a policeman. Spontaneously crimping for the passengers in a passing train

Asking Amanda to come and live in Melbourne - oh how she resisted... until I left a trail of lollipops to my door.

Fingers crossed 2011 will be filled with moments of epicness such as these :)

Christmas Eve Eve - The Longest Day

To help pass the time we celebrate in our own special way:

December 23rd (courtesy from my twitter feed)

Today is the day we traditionally lay a wreath of sausages on the neighbour's doorstep, sprinkle each other with 100s & 1000s and dance.

Then when the moon is high and our heads are wrapped with LED lights, we clasp hands and sing "Too Darn Hot" with throaty gusto.

Tucking the little ones into bed & sipping from the communal wine-skull, we tell them the age old tale of "Druid Godwin & the pesky Virgin".

And to round out the Dec 23rd festivities we sacrifice a flannel, cleanse our feet with fire and eat chocolate covered marshmallow Santas.

Happy penultimate, penultimate day folks!

A fresh face on the blog and some new words to tide you all over until the sporadic posting of the new year :)

There are so many wonderful things that have happened recently that I can safely say that 2010 is a turning point in an otherwise weird couple of years. Acting jobs went down but Design work went up which is still keeping me up and at 'em.

Here's some things that I've been enjoying recently:
The spring rain reminding me the gutters need cleaning, watching the twitter feed the night Hawke screened on Channel 10, improvising intestate with the folks from Full Body Contact No Love Tennis - as well as the regular folk at Impro Melbourne (speaking of which - last show for the year is Impro Unwrapped Sunday 7.30 Sunday 12th December at The Space), watching Gentlemen Broncos with Amanda and laughing at Sam Rockwell over and over again, sitting down and painting with my kids and the reading, reading, reading.

Life is good and Christmas is in the air.

Bam. Comedy Festival shows, Adelaide Fringe Festival shows, Summer seasons, One offs, Theatresports in Perth and Nationals in NSW - I'm the Poster King.

(And I'm ready for a little nap now.)

Collection of posters and flyers for Impro Melbourne's Cave season and Comedy Festival shows

Selection of logos I designed for the talented Cam Venn and his show Rodney Missing. These weren't used in the end but I'm fond of them.

Sydney's Impro Australia host this incredible night of improvisation - it rocks the Enmore theatre every year.

Spontaneous Broadway is an epic show that just keeps wowing them all over the country. This is the mock up for the Arts Centre backlit poster out the front.

Vida Hustas and Glenn Hall commissioned me to create a logo and then the poster for Spontaneous Insanity's brand new season of Theatresports. I'm happy to say it's already kicked off and going great.

Postcard and Poster for Ross Daniels' fantastic one man show - The Transposed Man. Ross and I share a love of 60's TV culture and we wanted to pay homage to that look.

The Ultimate Board Game Unscripted... from the people who brought you Scrabble Unscripted comes this new improv comedy beast. More to come.

Lax and Pax

How re-miss of me too leave this blog lying fallow for so long. So much has happened in the 'betweening months that it pains me to try and recall them but here goes:

My little brother turned 20. Not so little anymore.

Flew to Syd for Jordan & Alicia's Rock Wedding at the Vanguard

Scared the crap out of a child on an ABC3 show

Enjoyed bits and pieces of the Fringe Festival (watching a punter throw a plastic milk crate onto Daniel Kitson's head was both mind numbingly tedious and perversely hilarious)

Tried my hand at Storyboarding. Good fun. Better without the ridiculous deadline.

Flew to Sydney for the World's Funniest Island Mini Comedy festival. Much laughter and drinking and toothache was had.

(L-R Lee Naimo and I avoid looking at each other, AB and I dressed to the nines, AB in faux fur 'cause she's Fauxy, Luna Park shenanigans, The World's Funniest Island - a lot of these were taken from Amanda's Flickr page. I hope she doesn't mind)

Auditioned for an impro TV show and had a ball. Seriously disappointed when I didn't get in.

Back to Syd for Lee and Marlo's Yummy Wedding - more fun and frolics, dancing with the pretty ladies.

The IM Halloween Classic was fun and ridiculous. Great to see so many our countries top improvisers in the one room (sadly quite a few were missing as well)
Note - The huge colour A0 poster I made to hang out the front of the theatre was stolen after two days. I take that as a compliment.

Made pink worm spaghetti and "Brain" sauce for kids. Delicious.

Loads of auditions. Nothing. Que sera sera.

Went to the Gold Coast and spent four delirious days shuffling around in the heat wearing a black suit. A great Japanese meal was had.

My boy turned 12 and a pizza party was had by all. Participants roundly drenched by Spring rain dump.

Directed a photoshoot with the supremely talented Mark Gambino for IM. The closest I'll ever get to being David Bailey.

Auditioned for West Side Story. Hilarious in it's farcical nature. My apologies to Brett Cousins who I called "Scott" - terrible faux pax.

Was one of a final three for an ad worth a lot of money. Was one of the two who didn't get it.

Snogged at the Theatresports Grand Final. Good Times.

Amanda's Birthday! We sent up a package o'goodies.

Saw Spontaneous Broadway at the Comedy Theatre with my artwork on the Marquee. Great stuff (and my song was actually chosen - first time ever)

The Impro Melbourne Christmas show (as part of the National project "Impro Unwrapped") went really well and we raised loads of money and donated gifts to St Vinnies. Funny show too - I got to play a hunchback bell ringer who got to rub a nun for kicks. Ahhhh Christmas - it brings out the best in people.

Root Canal work. Grrrrr but thank you for the ultimate painless dentist. Alan Solomon - you rock.

End of year school performances were lovely. The boy MC'd and the Girl was a Sheep (admittedly one with ADHD)

And so we come to now - the drinking and feasting has begun. And the inevitable spiral that leads to outlandish New Year's resolutions is starting to twirl. But Play on I say.

2009 has been a mixed year of sorts I experienced so many wonderful moments of love and friendship as well as the regular plunge into bouts of inky blackness as we pathetic humans are wont to do. I raise a glass of something good (a Negroni perhaps?) to all my friends, family and work colleagues and wish you all the best for coming year - may you find happiness in unusual places and goodwill follow you everywhere like an annoying yappy lapdog. Salut!

Some more design flotsam from the recent files:

I drew everything first - all based on characters and scenarios that the cast told me about from personal experiences "...yeah, there's always a cheerleader in there". Then I scanned it in as a high res jpg, then re-drew and lettered in Illustrator as an A3 poster.

After receiving some change requests I cleaned it up and dropped the artwork (piece by piece) into Photoshop, tweaked it some more and buggered about nudging elements here and there...

Finally I saved as a high res PDF and emailed it off... then I watched a film at 2am and then went to bed.

I really enjoyed this project - lotsa colour, drawing and shapes. Very satisfying.

Original Version from Illustrator - the font is my own hand lettering.

Final cleaned up sexy versions.

p.s. If you're in Sydney go and see the show - they are wonderful improvisers and hilarious as well.

MICF is heading our way and so the air is filled with the sounds of hundreds of comedians and performers scrabbling to finish their shows. A chorus of hair-tearing groans and screams come wafting through the streets and back alleys as jokes are tried out on long suffering friends and family. I, for one, cannot wait - let the celebration of the funny begin!

2 - Go to the "Random Title Generator" - http://mdbenoit.com/rtg.htm and click “Give me Some Titles” - choose a title for your book.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days” http://flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ choose an image to suit or hit “reload” until inspiration hits – this will be your cover image.

4 - Use Photoshop or similar to put it all together. For inspiration – go here: http://www.bookcoverarchive.com/.

Occasionally a meme comes along that takes you by the hoodangers and gives them a twirl.

The whole "create a fake album" has me hooked. It's so damn simple and great fun for nerdy designer types like myself.

the "rules" are these:

1 - Go to "wikipedia." Hit “random... Read More”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to "Random quotations"

or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

then you're supposed to tag people on facebook and get them to do it too but I ignore that bit...

Now - I hate hard and fast meme rules - especially when it comes to the third one - so my new version is "pick any image off that page" (why do so many flickr denizens take shots of flowers?)
